Asia-Pacific’s premier annual trade event for alternative fuel in transportation is back.

The Alternative Fuel Transport Exhibition and conference for Asia pacific that will be held from 28-30 April at BITEC in Bangkok, endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Sustainable Transport Foundation and supported by the Ministry of Industry and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau. Over 40 countries will take part in this exhibition and Asian Trucker will be exhibiting too.

The AFT Asia 2014 exhibition and conference will highlight the latest technologies, developments and policies driving alternative fuel transport into the next decade.

There are many alternative fuel options available for commercial vehicles. Besides Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) these include biodiesel, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), hybrid, ethanol and hydrogen applications. Many of these were already strongly featured at the 2014 event in Bangkok.

During the 2014 instalment of the exhibition, the full spectrum of alternative clean transport will be displayed at AFT Asia 2014. The highlight features are going to be the VIP Forum, technical workshops and vehicle showcase.

The exhibition organisers aim at providing a platform that allows delegates toT a deeper understanding about each of the alternative fuels and to create awareness for the challenges that need to be faced for the implementation of each option.

"We are excited about this" says Stefan Pertz, Editor of the Malaysian and Hong Kong edition of Asian Trucker Magazine. "Ian and his team are very experienced and within short time they have achieved a lot in order to get the first issue done and ready for publication".

The vehicle is equipped with a new powerful yet environmentally friendly 410hp Euro 3 compliant engine. Built with the latest in EGR emission technology, the new global engine offers a higher torque at lower revs and even lower fuel consumption.

In addition to the standard Electronically controlled Anti-lock Blocking System (EBS) as well as Traction Control (TC) - which are now standard specifications across the range for all Scania buses – the new buses are also equipped with other advanced features such as 8-speed Scania Opticruise with kick-down and oil cooling for gearbox, Scania retarder and fully adjustable steering wheel as well as full-air suspension, ensuring a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

BSN acquired a Scania K 114 IB bus back in 2008 and the latest order further reinforces BSN’s confidence in Scania buses.

Several questions were repeatedly asked directly to the editor of the Asian Trucker magazine, Stefan Pertz and we would light to shed some light. The name of the magazine itself mostly shows the geographic area that they are active in. The magazine has now four editions which are published in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. This magazine is focused on all matters relating to the trucking industry.

After four years in the market, the response of the magazine is very encouraging as Asian Trucker started with its first issue publishing 48 pages. The latest issue sports some 120, and more companies support the magazine by advertising in Asian Trucker. The magazine will be published bi-monthly in Malaysia next year as the team has received a very good feedback from the market itself.

Although publishing a magazine is our main priority, Asian Trucker offers few other services in order to provide more communications channels to their customers. The biggest achievement for Asian Trucker is the Malaysia International Bus, Truck and Component Expo 2013 (MIBTC) which was held for three days at the MINES International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC), Selangor. During the Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City Asian Trucker met with Hengst at their booth to find out more about the Vietnamese aftermarket. In this exclusive interview we learned about the dynamics of the market and got a glimpse into the strategic plans of the German brand for the market.

In addition, speaking at the occasion, Ms. Koo mentioned the importance of gender diversity in the sector. ‘The nature of the industry requires dealing with people from all walks of life. It is not perceived as an elegant industry and hence has been dominated by male in the past. However, the industry has evolved with globalization and technology advancements. 4A executives (Adaptive, Agile, Aligned, Architecting) are required to cope with today’s challenges; and these are the innateness of women to handle.’ She also cited examples of organizations hesitancy to offer executive positions to women.

it has commenced sales for its battery electric trucks from 6 April 2022. It also announced the signing of a sales agreement today with its first customer, ALBA W&H Smart City, for 15 battery electric trucks, the first European-branded battery electric trucks in Singapore.

The L230B6X2*4NB trucks will be delivered in two batches. With the initial batch, which is already in production planning, Scania will homologate its battery electric trucks and the respective charging infrastructure in Singapore, while the second batch will demonstrate Scania’s ability to rolled out the vehicles on a fleet level.

In launching battery electric trucks, Scania aims to contribute to Singapore’s goal for all vehicles to run on cleaner energy by 2040 as well as Scania’s science-based targets for a 20% reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions generated through customers’ usage of its products.

“We are very pleased to welcome ALBA W&H Smart City as our pioneering partner towards more sustainable transportation in Singapore,” says Anders Liss, Country Manager of Scania Singapore. “It’s a significant leap forward in showcasing carbon-neutral transportation at a time when more organisations are coming on board to address the global climate crisis. ALBA together with Scania in a sustainable partnership is now part of the SG Green Plan 2030 journey towards net-zero emissions.”

“Being a city state, Singapore is the logical choice for us to establish our first fleet of fully electric vehicles,” said Sashi Kumar, General Manager of Solid Waste from ALBA W&H Smart City. “However, at the same time it is a highly competitive and demanding market with the highest service level expected worldwide, including daily collections and up to 12-hour shifts of continuous operation.”

Mr Kumar added: “We have monitored the market for electric vehicles for several years now and are happy that with Scania’s battery electric trucks, we finally found an electrified chassis that is ready for our daily grind of waste collection in the clean and green city of Singapore.”

The battery electric trucks can operate at close to zero emissions when using cleaner sources of electricity supplemented with the purchase of renewable energy certificates.

Each truck operates as a permanent magnet electric machine with oil spray cooling, with peak propulsion of about 295kW, 2,200 Nm and continuous propulsion of about 230 kW, 1300 Nm. With up to 250 km range on a single charge, it can cover short and medium distances on electric power.

Nine lithium-ion batteries, with an installed capacity of 297 kW, are backed by up to eight years of warranty. Direct current charging is carried out by the European-standard CCS type 2 plug-in connection at up to 130 kW/ 200 A.

In Singapore, customers can choose from the P-cab or L-cab series and 4x2, 6x2 or 6x2*4 wheel configurations with a maximum gross trailer weight of 28 tonnes. The battery electric trucks are suitable for urban operations such as distribution, waste collection, hook lifts, tippers and concrete mixers.

Mr Liss added: “An investment in a battery electric truck improves operators’ branding and market competitiveness as responsible organisations. They are addressing their own climate goals as well as the climate goals of their customers and society.”

Scania’s battery electric trucks are sold as a total solution with charging infrastructure, vehicle optimisation customised to the customer’s operations, repair and maintenance services and the option for financing and insurance services.

ALBA W&H Smart City is a joint venture between Berlin-based ALBA Group, one of the leading recycling and environmental services companies as well as raw material providers worldwide, and Wah & Hua, a leading Singapore waste management provider. To the drivers who always wonder if they are hitting the sweet spot, weather to shift up or what is the optimal revolution range that uses the least amount of fuel, these are the reasons why Quester was developed by UD Trucks. UD Trucks is part of the Volvo Group, and the Quester is made using the Volvo Group's production system after UD joined the Volvo Group.

Quester is the first truck from a Japanese manufacturer to offer hub reduction axles. Two of the configurations have optional bogie lifting axles which help to minimize the fuel consumption and tire life. Some interesting facts:

The Hexagon goes all the way back to the shape found on the grill of the ‘Cab Over Truck’ in 1960. The shape is been used modestly in the Quon and Condor (previous truck by UD Truck), but now it’s very distinctive and prominent on Quester.

The design of the “hexagon concept”, which is personified in the front grill represents: tough, smart, distinctive, harmonized, caring and supportive. These points lets Quester completely convey the UD Trucks product design of philosophy “Dependable Tools with Soul”.

Quester’s cab has a distinctive and dynamic exterior with a unique slanted from inspired by modern skyscraper and a tower as a symbol of growth markets. Driving distance is no longer a problem when you can have so much comfort while driving with Quester.

“This truck has gone through both European and Japanese product development testing and standards, so it has been tested to the highest and most difficult standards that are in the industry today” said Ian Sinclair, Product Management Director.

“We’re itching to roll Quester out for the customers, because we’re sure that they’re going to be very pleased with what they see” Sinclair adds. In order to create something original and not a copy of existing product, the group of UD Trucks had changed their attitudes and their thinking by developing a truck that’s fully adapted to the Asian ecosystem.

There are two engine choices, the 8-litre GH8E and the 11-litre GH11E, each available in three to four different horsepower ratings, depending on the configuration. No doubt, Quester is definitely range for any task.
