It’s the panther’s birthday

In comparison to the competition, DOLL demonstrates market-readiness with the panther-plus package: 5 years of warranty on all proprietary DOLL components in the vehicle: “Since after delivery hardly ever a vehicle returns to our workshop, the majority of our service personnel can be used for the production of new vehicles” says Rolf Gerhardt, engineering manager in the house, DOLL employee of 37 years’ standing. Third-party components are dispensed with in the panther to the utmost extent possible, because operational reliability and optimal driving characteristics require particularly precise matching of all components of the independent wheel suspension with the frame and chassis design. This tailored synchronization with the frame enables the specially patented panther components to completely do without soft bearings and use of rubber in the direction of the axles. Thus extraordinarily low maintenance and low wear are achieved, while driveability is concomitantly improved. This also means improvements in terms of road conservation – sustainability, which is estimated by authorities particularly in times like these when roads require preservation.

The panther’s third birthday thus emphasizes the maturity of the product, and at DOLL’s booth at Bauma it will be duly celebrated with all customers and prospects.

Kajian penyelidikan

(James A. Levine, MD, Ph.D. Mayo Clinic endocrinologist)

Leading Corporations Join Forces to Tackle Freight Emissions in Asia

Leading logistics service providers, DHL and UPS, global home furnishing retailer IKEA, and technology leaders HP and Lenovo, supported by partners, Green Transformation Lab[1] and Clean Air Asia[2], have joined together as founding members to incorporate Green Freight Asia as a non-profit association in Singapore, emerging from an informal network created in 2011 by Green Transformation Lab and Clean Air Asia, along with 25 shippers, logistics companies and carriers.

"Logistics costs as percentage of GDP range from about 14% in India and 18% in China to 24% in Indonesia, compared to about 10% in the US, Europe and Japan[3]. Fuel scarcity and rising fuel prices pose a higher risk to economies in Asia." explained Stephan Schablinski, newly appointed Executive Director of Green Freight Asia.

Robert Earley, Transport Program Manager of Clean Air Asia said: "Only 9% of vehicles in Asia are trucks, but they are responsible for 54% of CO2 emissions and a similar proportion of particulate emissions. By orienting shippers, carriers and other players in the logistics industry to focus on improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions from trucks, Asian countries can help address climate change while also making their economies stronger and the air in cities cleaner."[4]

Green Freight Asia will work with its members to develop and promote tools for measuring and reporting fuel consumption and emissions from road freight and identify what technologies and strategies will be most effective for carriers to reduce fuel consumption, such as low rolling resistance tires, equipment to reduce aerodynamic drag, alternative fuels, fleet management and driver training.

A benchmarking scheme will be developed to evaluate and recognize the sustainability efforts of manufacturing companies, freight logistics companies and carriers, and importantly, make these accomplishments visible to consumers and investors. Furthermore, a platform for sharing best practices between member companies will make it easier for others to replicate successes.

The association will also focus on working with Asian governments in developing national green freight programs

Green Freight Asia will create value for its members by helping them to achieve increased fuel efficiency that saves costs and increases business competitiveness, and to recognize the sustainability efforts that are being made, to inform consumers about members' level of commitment to more sustainable transport -- all with the objective of decreasing air pollution and GHG emissions in Asia.

Green Freight Asia is open for companies to join as members, and is also hoping to attract other partner organizations who share the same vision to enable methods and partnerships for industry to accelerate the adoption of sustainable supply chain practices across Asia

LEVERAGING INNOVATION TO MAKE MALAYSIAN ROADS SAFER

Malaysia, 15 January 2013 – Road traffic injuries are one of the fastest growing epidemics across the world. Over 1.2 million people die every year on the roads worldwide with 20 - 50 million suffering from non-fatal injuries. In most regions of the world especially South East Asia, road traffic casualties are still on the rise (Source: World Health Organization, 2009).

As part of Volvo Trucks’ continuous effort towards road safety across the world, the Swedish truck has partnered with Agensi Inovasi Malaysia to launch an initiative that aims to find innovative solutions to make Malaysian roads safer for motorcycles and trucks.

The initiative, Innovative Solutions to Reduce Crashes between Trucks and Motorcycles or iSTREC: Trucks and Motorcycles in short, was inaugrated today, 15 January 2013 at Volvo Malaysia’s headquarters in Shah Alam. The signing ceremony was witnessed and officiated by His Excellency Mr. Bengt G Carlsson, Ambassador of Sweden to Malaysia. Also present at the inauguration were other Malaysian and Swedish organizations that are a part of this initiative - the Swedish Trade Council (STC), University Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and SAFER – Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre, Sweden.

A study by MIROS and Hospital Kuala Lumpur Forensic Department on fatal crashes involving motorcyclist revealed that in terms of vehicle type involved in crash, commercial vehicles accounted 32% of total number of crashes followed by single vehicle crashes (28%) and passenger car (23%). Collision with heavy vehicle subgroup suffered substantially more severe injuries as opposed to single vehicle accident and others. The study also revealed that there was a substantially high crash of sideswipe and rear end collision involving heavy vehicle and motorcyclist.

The relative death risk for motorcyclists is higher than for passenger cars due to substantial differences in vehicle mass, degree of protection, and speed. These differences are particularly notable for the collision between a motorcycle and a truck.

Additionally, it has been observed that drivers’ attitudes toward motorcyclists, empathic attitudes, awareness of perceptual problems in detecting motorcycles, and spatial understanding of motorcycles are also important factors that influence how car drivers interact with motorcycles. However, due to differences in driving competency requirements and purposes of travelling, the attitudes of truck drivers towards motorcyclists may be different than car drivers.

iSTREC: Trucks and Motorcycles aims to address this challenge by primary and secondary research followed by a nationwide awareness programme through traditional and modern tools to reach a wide number of truck drivers and motorcyclists.

“At Volvo Trucks, road traffic safety sits at the core of our product and community project objectives. The issue of road safety has become increasingly important issue in Malaysia over the last few years. Infrastructure development and high speed highways have brought their own set of challenges. The number of road fatalities has increased drastically in Malaysia over the years. With such staggering numbers and the constant danger to motorcyclists and truck drivers, Volvo Trucks Malaysia realized the importance of reducing the number of casualties as well as the cause of these accidents”, shared Mansoor Ahmed, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia.

The collaboration aims to bring together Malaysian and Swedish corporate bodies and agencies for technology and best practice exchange across both nations. The initiative will be divided into two stages and will be implemented throughout the year.

The first stage will be carried out over the course of the next six months. It involves primary and secondary research to develop innovative solutions for the challenges presented in the form of truck and motorcycle clashes. The second stage involves the implementation of the developed innovative solution and a nationwide awareness programme. The initiative also aims to boost the exchange of technology and information between both countries and to support the Malaysian government to reduce the number of road casualties in the country.

Commenting on the research initiative, His Excellency Mr. Bengt G Carlsson, Ambassador of Sweden to Malaysia said, “With Sweden being the leading country to record the lowest number of road fatalities since its implementation of Vision Zero, we are glad to be a part of this initiative and help Malaysia implement some of our learnings. Historically, we have shared a healthy diplomatic relationship with the country and the time has come for us to work together for the greater good of our peoples.”

Together with AIM’s involvement, this research is bound to promote and support collaboration between industry, academia and government bodies to develop and implement innovative solutions to the existing challenge.

Mark Rozario, the Chief Executive Officer of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia said that the government statutory body mandated to create wealth for the Nation through Innovation is excited to be part of this important initiative. “We see this as an opportunity to affect real change in this space. In addition to the obvious potential of saving lives and livelihoods, this initiative stands to save the country millions of ringgit in lost time, productivity and other long-term costs related to road accidents.

“More importantly, we as a group need to ensure the findings from this study get translated into realistic, actionable recommendations for the relevant bodies to implement,” Mark further adds.

Speaking on the collaboration, Anna Nilsson-Ehle, Director of SAFER said, “The conflict between powered two-wheelers and heavy vehicles is an important research area if we are to reduce severe injuries in traffic. Great improvement can be expected if research helps to understand the accident mechanisms and can prove innovative counter-measures. Such research results would also be valid for other countries with many two-wheelers and could thus contribute to further save lives and suffering. SAFER is proud to be part as an advisory research partner in this project and look forward to the enhanced competence that will strengthen not only Malaysian participants but also the Swedish researchers and increase the safety of vulnerable road users.”

“With the varied expertise that each party brings to the table as part of iSTREC: Trucks and Motorcycles, we are confident that we will succeed in developing and widely implementing a solution to reduce crashes between motorcycles and truckers in Malaysia. The results may not be visible overnight but it is a project that each of us truly believes in”, Mansoor further adds.

Australian Logistics Provider StarTrack Buys 185 Fuso Trucks

StarTrack, Australia's largest freight and logistics company is supplementing its existing fleet of 3,000 trucks with 185 new vehicles of the light-duty type Fuso Canter. StarTrack has relied on the quality of the Fuso brand for quite some time. In 2011, the company established itself as operator of the largest fleet of hybrid vehicles on the Australian continent. The “green” fleet consists of several dozen Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid commercial trucks. StarTrack’s fleet of conventional and alternative-drive vehicles processes over 1.2 million shipments throughout Australia each week and thus relies to a particularly great extent on trucks with efficient fuel consumption.

Sinotruk Malaysia - An update

Recently, truck number 1500 rolled out of the production in Kapar, the manufacturing base for Sinotruk where Asia Automotive Industries (AAI) is based. When Sinotruk Malaysia started, prime movers were the first vehicles to be offered: 6 x 4, 6 x 2 and 4 x 2 HOWOs were the core of the product line-up. "Our strategy is working" says Mr. Loo, COO of Sinotruk Malaysia. The idea, according to him, was to bring in a product first that would allow the brand to establish itself through the ability to sell volume. "There is no point to start with SPVs as one does not reach critical mass fast enough. You need to start with products that can be purchased in batches by customers. This will allow for a rapid expansion, both in terms of vehicle sales and service network. How to handle service and maintenance of a only a few trucks?" he explains.

Today, the company has a wide range in the portfolio, covering prime movers, mixers and tippers. The latest addition is a new engine variant for the 6 x 4 prime mover, offering some 420 HP. This version of the HOWO will develop more torque at lower revs: 420 HP will be available at 2000 Rpm and 1850 Nm torque from 1100 - 1500 Rpm, which gives the HOWO even better fuel economy and pulling-power.

"We have now seen all sorts of applications for our trucks, from curtainsiders to sideloaders, tipper to mixers in various sizes." Loo says. Sinotruk has also invested heavily in a service network spanning both, Peninsular and East Malaysia. "I am excited to say that we are not only the first Chinese truck brand in Malaysia, but also the first Chinese truck brand that you will see when you go to MIBTC. It is going to be one show that you can't miss!"

Sinotruk can be found at MIBTC 2013 at booth M 05.
