Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research Appoints New Chairman
The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) is pleased to announce the appointment of
Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon as the new Chairman of the MIROS Board of Directors with effect from
5th February 2022 to succeed Datuk Suret Singh whose term ended on 4th February 2022.
Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon is an expert with extensive experience in the field of road safety at the national and international levels. His involvements include the enactment of various road safety policies in Malaysia such as the wearing of rear seatbelt, revision of the Road Transport Act 1987 on driving under influence (alcohol and drugs) and implementing the framework of United Nations (UN) Regulations relating to vehicle safety. Besides, he was also involved in the establishment of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), ASEAN Road Safety Centre, ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) for Malaysia, and the development of national and international standards on road safety such as the Guideline for Road Safety Audit, Code of Practices for Transport Sector and the ISO39001 Road Traffic Safety Management Systems.
Furthermore, Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon has served as the Special Advisor on Road Safety to the Minister of Transport and Communications Myanmar. He was also a representative of the Malaysian Government for proposing the endorsement of the ASEAN Declaration on Road Safety Strategy by the ASEAN Transport Ministers in 2015.
Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon is currently a Professor at the Department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, University Putra Malaysia (UPM) and earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from the Dublin City University, Ireland. He has also served as the Director-General of MIROS for six years ending in September 2017 and has also been a member of the MIROS Board of Directors since August 2011.
The credibility and leadership of Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon in the field of road safety is hoped to drive MIROS to excel in research and development in the field of road safety towards developing policies relating to road safety in Malaysia.
MIROS would also like to express our highest gratitude to Datuk Suret Singh for his outstanding services and contributions during his tenure as Chairman of the MIROS Board of Directors since February 2019.
