Isuzu's Newest Next Generation Giga Heavy Duty Trucks Built for Greater Efficiency

The recently introduced next generation Isuzu GIGA heavy-duty trucks range, which is the first full model change since Isuzu launched the first generation in 1994 in Japan, is a strong indication of the company’s ambition to strengthening its presence in the heavy-duty segment. The new GIGA range comprises five new models built with powerful stature, strong performance and greater comfort, paving the way for Isuzu to capture a larger market share in Malaysia’s heavy-duty and
prime mover segment.

The trucks include the ‘C’ and ‘E’ series which are model CYZ420 rigid trucks with 7-speed manual transmission, EXR420 4x2 and EXZ460 6x4 prime mover models that are available in up to 16- speed manual transmission and automated manual transmission (AMT). These trucks have Euro 3 emission standard with 15.6-litre 6WG1 engine capable in producing pulling strength at 420 and 460 horsepower.

Models with the AMT Smoother-GX transmission ensures a smooth start by reducing the gear shift shock. This feature also automatically controls both the accelerator and shift changes to improve fuel economy and to provide a much more comfortable driving experience and less driver fatigue.

With higher power, performance and stature, these new Giga trucks are ideal for demanding operations for the construction, heavy haulage and bulk delivery industries.
For maximum safety, the trucks are also equipped with the Isuzu Safety Plus platform which offer key safety features including anti-lock braking system (ABS), SRS airbag for driver and brakes override accelerator (BOA).

Atsunori Murata, Chief Operating Officer, Isuzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd said, “This new Giga range is inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘Meri Hari’ (“メリハリ“), which means balance. This is achieved by harmonising toughness and power with that of comfort and economy by embodying strength and innovation on the cab exterior and perfected functionality, comfort and spaciousness in the cab interior.”

The cab shape has been optimized to a cubic form to achieve the best-in-class aerodynamics which significantly reduces the coefficient of drag and air pressure on the body or trailer front by gently diverting the air flowing around the cab. Thus, there is better cooling performance which is an important component of clean exhaust gas, reduction of noise from strong winds, safer driving journey and lesser amount of fuel being consumed by the trucks.

Putting a strong focus on truck drivers, the cab interior of the new GIGA trucks features European standards ergonomic design for more driver-friendly features, better operability and increased comfort. A key feature for the prime mover models is the ISRI brand high-performance seat with an integrated seat belt produced by the prominent German company ISRINGHAUSEN.

This seat is highly popular in Europe especially for very long-distance driving and its flexibility to accommodate a wide array of body types. For example, this seat can accommodate people with up to 2 meters in height and 150 kg in weight. Other features include seat warmer and cooling ventilation, and various adjustments such as tilt structure, reclining angle, shoulder adjustment, lumbar support and more to better fit different body shapes and preferences.

The dashboard is designed with a semi-round instrument panel which aggregates switches near the instrument cluster and panel. The farthest edge of the instrument panel has been extended forward by 160 mm at a 20° angle to improve usability without the driver feeling cramped. As the various switches are neatly arranged in zones based on usage frequency, this enables a more efficient and smoother operating environment.

The instrument cluster graphics have been carefully deliberated on with regard to the division of space priority placements and font type to ensure easy viewing and comprehension of information at a glance for the driver.

In the instrument cluster is a 4-inch LCD multi-information display meter which displays variousimportant information for the driver such as the driver assistance, transmission, utility and always-on display areas. The main display is arranged on a compact T-shaped guideline to ease viewing and increase safety.

On top of that, the multi-information display meter and cruise control can also be operated via the steering wheel which now contain relevant switches. This is a new feature in Isuzu trucks which can significantly improve operability and safety while driving. The size of the steering wheel has also been reduced by 20 mm, as compared to other previous Giga models, by decreasing the steering operation force to improve maneuverability.

The cab interior is also optimized and is more spacious with ample storage compartments to keep stems safely and neatly stored, such as the header tray, cup holders, center console box with lid for storing items like keys, center top tray for storing items like handphones and large door pocket on the driver side which is useful for storing items like handy sized maps and notepads.

Both the opening height and width of the driver and passenger doors have been increased to significantly expand the area of the opening for ease of entry and exit. In addition, serviceability is improved with designs such as larger cab tilt angle and easy-to-remove headlight rim without having to detach the bumper.

From core necessities like real time positioning of the NTG ADR, via vehicle performance, environmental reports, service planning and defect reporting all the way to driver evaluation which will help it to quickly identify potential vehicle usage improvements.

To begin with, the vehicle introduction training that was given by a Scania trainer upon delivery got the dedicated drivers up to speed and ensured they get familiar with the controls ensuring maximum uptime from the very start of its operations.

“Safety has always and will always be at the top of our concern for our customers. Getting this latest contract to transport dangerous materials required a truck that will ensure our operations are safe resulting in the safe delivery of the load for our customer. Though our dedicated drivers are mandatorily trained by our customer, we are glad that Scania is also giving specialised familiarisation training in getting the best out of the ADR NTG for our drivers,” stressed Madang Jok.

Established in Miri in 1991, Jospun Jaya was founded by Jok Ding and daughter Roselyn Jok who is presently the Managing Director. The main nature of business is the transportation of fuel-based products such as diesel and operating from Miri (HQ), with branches in Bintulu and Sibu.

“Being the first to invest in a Scania ADR NTG in Sarawak spells a leadership move. Our Scania ADR trucks are presently being widely used in Malaysia and Jospun Jaya’s Scania ADR truck will now set the safety standard requirements for the transportation of hazardous goods in Sarawak. We believe, this boost Jospun Jaya’s journey in achieving long-term success in their business,” stated Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia.

Keysight’s Battery Test Solution Accelerates Scania’s Heavy Transport Electrification

Keysight Technologies, Inc, a leading technology company that delivers advanced design and validation solutions to help accelerate innovation to connect and secure the world, announced that Scania has chosen Keysight's Scienlab Battery Test Solutions for its new state-of-the-art battery laboratory at its research and development facilities in Södertälje, Sweden.

Scania, part of the Volkswagen Group, is one of the world's top manufacturers for buses and trucks and is driving the shift to e-mobility for commercial vehicles while pursuing a long-term strategy to achieve the company goals for innovation and sustainability. The new 1,000-square-meter laboratory includes three 250-square-meter test halls for battery cells, modules and packs. The main focus is on battery performance and lifespan evaluation in various climatic conditions from -40°C to 70°C.

Keysight provided a customized turnkey battery laboratory solution including the full range of the company's Scienlab Battery Test Systems for cells, modules and packs, coupled with a comprehensive safety concept while realizing the installation at the customer's site. In addition to Keysight's Energy Storage Discover Software for test and control, Scania leveraged Keysight's PathWave Lab Operations for Battery Test, an integrated, web-based lab management platform that optimizes workflow, test throughput and data management. This solution enables Scania to optimize planning and coordination of its battery laboratory by managing all resources, including lab personnel, test systems and devices under test (DUTs).

"The need for relevant skills and knowledge in battery usage and lifecycle optimization is more important than ever before. Here in the lab, we have the prerequisites to perform our very best in this area," said Håkan Örnhed, Head of Test Cell Operation Battery and E-components at Scania. "We see an increasing need to intensify battery testing and tailored deployment. Keysight's experience and expertise in battery testing has resulted in a solution that meets our requirements, which made them the perfect choice to realize this crucial project." Örnhed continued.

Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul Receives the “2023 Truck Innovation Award”

The Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul wins the “2023 Truck Innovation Award”. The prestigious industry award is presented to particularly innovative trucks by the “International Truck of the Year” (IToY) jury, which is made up of 25 experienced commercial vehicle journalists from important international media from Europe and other countries. Karin Rådström, CEO Mercedes-Benz Trucks, received the award tonight from Gianenrico Griffini, Chairman of the IToY jury, at an event at the IAA Transportation 2022 in Hanover. Decisive for the vote was the innovative overall technological concept with LFP battery technology, the new e-axle, as well as Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ high development speed.

The heavy battery-electric eActros LongHaul for long-distance transport is Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ trade show highlight and was unveiled as a concept prototype at a press conference in the run-up to the IAA. The e-truck has a range of around 500 kilometres on a single battery charge and is capable of high-performance charging. Readiness for series production is planned for 2024.

In recent years, the Mercedes-Benz eActros for heavy-duty distribution transport and the hydrogen-based fuel cell truck Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck have also won the Innovation Award.

New OKO Tyre Sealant Product Launch at the MCVE

OKO Malaysia uses the ‘MCVE ‘for the Malaysian Launch of the mobile fitting service for OKO’s outstanding tyre sealant for motorbikes. With good reason, as many drivers of commercial vehicles get to work on a motorbike.

Punctures in a 4 wheel vehicle are a big inconvenience – but much more so (dangerous even) with a 2 wheel vehicle. Especially if the main bread winner travels to and from work on only two wheels.

“Many riders we have spoken to, are aware of earlier tyre sealants for tubeless tyre motorbikes, but they have complaints that they do not last, they create imbalanced wheels and vibration, only seals 2-3mm punctures if it still works!” Graham Carmichael, Director, OKO Malaysia told Asian Trucker. According to him, there have also been numerous complaints about wheel rim corrosion when using other products.

OKO’s On Road Motorbike sealant uses the latest sealant technology and customers will suffer none of the above complaints.

The reason for that is that OKO’s formulation uses no latex/ammonia mixtures, which can create allergies if the sealant comes into contact with skin. Also in very rare cases, it may cause death via anaphylactic shock. OKO sealant’s formulas have been developed to ensure no ingredients will damage wheels or tyres. More importantly, OKO reduces the risk of a puncture causing the rider to fall off after losing control of the motorbike.

Carmichael stresses these key points for OKO Motorbike sealant:
- Lasts the life of the tyre
- Creates no vibration/imbalanced wheels
- Seals multiple punctures of 5mm instantaneously
- Washes out with water if the puncture is bigger than 5mm and you want to repair the tyre.
- The seal strength is 1.6 time stronger than a Patch repair and 6 time stronger than a ‘plug’ repair.
- If the puncture is larger than5mm, OKO will still try and seal the puncture and allow the rider to bring the bike to a stop with some control.

OKO Motorbike tyre sealant prices start from a very reasonable RM35-40 per motorbike for the smaller ‘kapcais’; up to RM85-90+ for the very largest bikes
Here is the link to tell customers just how much OKO is needed (in ml) per tyre size.

“Why do we launch at the MCVE? Well we know that many Truck drivers use a motorbike to drive to the yard they collect their trucks from. Getting a puncture while on the way to work might mean you miss out on a job, or if you are coming home after a day’s work you just to not want that hassle,” he said further. Obviously, this brings benefits for both employee and employer.

Of course, what better way to launch this New Product and Service, than with a Special Offer for the Members of the Asian Truckers Club!

Special Offer For the three days of the MCVE, OKO Malaysia and their Dealer, Saxa Sdn Bhd, will provide FREE OF CHARGE’ the correct dose of OKO Tyre sealant for the first 15 Asian Trucker Club Members, who bring their bikes to the OKO Mobile fitting booth by the Scania “A Good Driver” Competition in the outdoor area. Riders must be able to prove membership of the Asian Truckers Club. The offer is limited to one bike per Club member.

New Safety System to Protect Cyclists and Pedestrians

In busy traffic situations, it is difficult for even the most experienced driver to perceive everything around the truck. To prevent stressful situations for the driver, Volvo Trucks is offering its new safety system. Using a dual radar on each side of the truck, the system detects when other road users, for example cyclists, enter the risk area.

“An accident can happen in a split second. Our extensive accident research is based on decades of studying real-life situations, and this new safety system helps the driver to prevent potential collisions,” says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks.

When someone is in the blind spot zone, the system, called Side Collision Avoidance Support, informs the driver via a red light on the relevant side mirror. If the driver indicates a lane change via the turn signal, the red light starts to flash and a warning sound emits from the side of the potential collision. The driver is alerted and can brake the truck, allowing for example a cyclist to pass.

“At Volvo Trucks, our long-term vision is zero accidents, and safety is at the core of everything we do. This new system is another example of our efforts to accomplish these aims,” concludes Anna Wrige.”

The new system will be available globally on the Volvo FH, FM and FMX with diesel, gas and electric drivelines, starting in September this year. The Volvo FL and FE models will get the new safety system in 2023. Volvo Trucks Malaysia noted that this system will eventually also be introduced in Malaysia.
