The city of Shanghai is slowly but surely beginning to phase out diesel trucks. According to report on the central government’s website, some 120 000 lower-end diesel trucks are to be put out of use by 2022.

Starting from the 1^st of April 2020, the Shanghai government will be banning the ‘problematic’ diesel trucks from running in certain highways in the city and the enforcement will eventually expand in stages to cover highways surrounding the metropolitan.

The 120 000 ‘problematic’ trucks had in 2018 been identified by the authorities to produce 30 percent of the city’s total vehicle emission of nitrogen oxides and 46 percent of particles. This is a stark contrast when these 120 000 trucks only make up 2.9 percent of the city’s total registered vehicle fleet.

The statement further emphasised that subsidies will be granted to truck operators who phase out the vehicles ahead of the designated date. Subsidies will range from 3 000 yuan (RM 1760) to
116 000 yuan (RM 68 080) depending on the tonnage of the vehicle. Besides that, diesel coaches will also be subsidised if phased out earlier than required.
