WABCO Holdings Inc. (NYSE: WBC), a leading global supplier of technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of commercial vehicles, announced that it has successfully acquired the remaining 3.16 percent of Transics International in BRUSSELS, Belgium on June 10, 2014.

As announced on February 13, 2014, WABCO had acquired 96.84 percent of Transics International shares for a net consideration of EUR 95.8 million. WABCO subsequently made a public offer to acquire the remaining 3.16 percent of outstanding shares, consistent with Belgian takeover rules.

As a result of the successful takeover procedure completed recently, WABCO now owns 100 percent of the securities issued by Transics International NV. This means

WABCO paid in net consideration a total amount of EUR 99.9 million for the 100 percent acquisition of Transics International.

As part of WABCO, Transics International will continue to operate under its own brand. Based in Ypres, Belgium, Transics International also has offices in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, and it manages a sales network across Europe.

Even in our industry, hijacking is a serious issue. It causes nothing but a serious internal and external damage. Reputation and lives are at stake. Your company may experience revenue loss, higher insurance premiums, parts shortages, business interruptions, workers' compensation claims, and angry customers. More serious issues occur if anyone gets injured, or even killed.

We have done a survey through our Asian Trucker Driver Club page (Facebook), and we received plenty of comments to share experiences and information from drivers on this issue.
Long distance haulage usually consists of a cargo truck or tanker trailer which offer more possibilities for hijacking to take place. Naturally, hijackers would target those trucks carrying valuable and expensive products.

Follow routine safety measures

Every company has their own safety policy and procedures. Training provided to the drivers will typically include briefings about the safety of the truck and how to protect themselves in the case such crime occurs. For the drives, it is essential to practice all the safety measures in their daily work routine.

• Be alert of suspicious people when you load / unload your goods or pump petrol
• Get info about places where hijacking often occurs
• You may also take another initiative such as lock up cash or hide it
• Try to stop about 5m behind the car in front of you at a stop sign or traffic light – it makes for an easy getaway if trouble arises
• Have knowledge about the hijacker’s tricks and methods
• Always carry information on you that identifies your truck, cargo and equipment

Truck Security

• Ensure the truck doors and windows are always closed and llocked whenever you park he truck or even when the truck is moving
• Turn off the engine and lock the truck during refuel your truck
• Find a safe parking spot for your truck such as a police station; avoid dark and quiet places

Install Tracking and Immobilizes Devices

Most companies nowadays have their truck equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) or immobilizing devices which are customized for trucks. There are several features that offer security benefits:
• Two way communication between driver and command centre
• Consist of panic button hidden in the truck for the emergency situation which will trigger an alarm and may even alert the police
• Giving signal to the company if the battery compartment of the truck is being opened
• Global Positioning System (GPS) devices are commonly used to track the locations of trucks and trailers. Sophisticated system can even track truck and trailer separately or individual boxes within the cargo.
• These disable vital automotive functions and prevent the engine from being restarted until a hidden switch is activated
• These should be used along with the other mentioned security tips, as a disabled vehicle can still be towed away

This ever-improving company attributes its growth and success to its dedicated and experienced work force of 38 staffs.
Mostly, Briliant Decade is focused on the internal delivery. The company prioritises own goods and their main area of operation is the Klang Valley. Typical goods transported include steel, pipes and others. The company uses a mix of several truck brands. Older trucks are Nissan, Hino, Izusu and Scania while their new trucks are Sinotruk and Auman.
“In my opinion, the Chinese truck brands entering the market now perform quite well. Therefore, they are expanding to meet the market need” said Mr Anndrew.

Safety First
Been asked about which safety aspects concern the company the most, he responded, “I take the overloading issue seriously. In Briliant Decade we strictly follow the limit because we need to look out for the driver’s safety and as well as the truck conditions. Overloading will bring nothing other than damages, to material and potentially to people”.
As a manifestation of this approach, every month Mr Anndrew will have a random spot check on the drivers. “I practice this method because I want the drivers to come to work in a healthy condition. Sometimes these drivers do not feel well but they tend to continue working. When this happens, I will ask them to go the hospital or to have a rest,” he said. In addition, the company will send the drivers to the training when the need arises.

Briliant Decade Future
Brilliant Decade is concentrating on the internal deliveries. Sometimes the company accepts requests from other companies, however, the outsourcing of services is not their priority. In the future, they are considering to provide external delivery and to extend the delivery coverage beyond the Klang Valley. This will certainly require them to add more trucks to the fleet.

Empiric study
While all this sounds fairly sophisticated, it simply means that the use of Mobileye's technology will reduce accidents.

In a study commissioned by the Ministry of Transport, Netherlands in 2008, some 2400 trucks were monitored. A sample size of 400 trucks was operating without Mobileye. The estimated number of crashes during the test phase was to be between four and five accidents. The other 2000 trucks were fitted with Mobileye techonolgy. The basic assumption was that second sample size is five times bigger and the use of Mobileye technology would reduce the accidents by about 50 %. Hence the second, larger sample should have had between 11 - 13 accidents.

Some 77 Million Kilometers later the results came in to surprise everyone. While the sample without Mobileye had five accidents, as initially estimated as the high value. Meanwhile, the larger group of trucks fitted with the ADAS had zero accidents.
