Vision Zero Launch: Sweden and Malaysia Deepen Cooperation on Road Safety

Sweden and Malaysia marked a new chapter in their bilateral cooperation on road safety with the official launch of the Vision Zero by Sweden initiative in Malaysia. Rooted in Sweden’s internationally recognized approach to traffic safety, Vision Zero aims to ensure that no one is killed or seriously injured in road traffic, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.

The launch underscores a shared commitment by both countries to enhance road safety and save lives. It builds on Sweden’s decades-long experience in designing safe, inclusive, and sustainable transport systems, as well as on previous Swedish-Malaysian collaboration efforts to improve road safety.

On May 29th, His Excellency Mr. Niklas Wiberg, Ambassador of Sweden to Malaysia, invited to the Launch of the new Initiative of Vision Zero in Malaysia 2025. Building on a longstanding partnership between the two countries in the areas of road safety, automotive, and transport sectors, Vision Zero represents a new milestone in the shared commitment to saving lives and transforming mobility systems.

Event Highlights included:

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony between Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) as well as the
  • Presentation of upcoming Vision Zero activities by Team Sweden and MIROS

As part of this strengthened collaboration, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) will be officially extended. The renewed agreement will facilitate deeper institutional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and capacity building to support Malaysia’s national road safety goals.

"We are proud to deepen the collaboration between Malaysia and Sweden on Road Safety, through our joint initiative Vision Zero. Sweden views this as a long-term partnership to promote sustainable and safe mobility systems together with our Malaysian counterparts," said Wiberg.

The Vision Zero initiative in Malaysia will take a holistic systems-based approach – focusing on infrastructure design, vehicle safety, road user behavior, and policy development – to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Swedish solution providers and institutions will in the activities arranged within the initiative contribute with expertise and innovative solutions in areas such as two-wheeler safety, heavy vehicle policies and how to best use AI in driver behavioural analysis, crash prediction and prevention.

"Our collaboration with Sweden reflects a strong alignment in values and ambition. Vision Zero is not merely a concept; it is a call to action. MIROS is proud to champion this initiative by leveraging our data-driven research, regional experience, and community outreach. Together with our partners, we aim to localise Vision Zero in a way that resonates with Malaysian road users, infrastructure, and environment,” said Associate Professor Ts Dr Siti Zaharah binti Ishak, Director General, MIROS.

The extension of the MIROS–VTI MoU and the launch of Vision Zero by Sweden represents a concrete step forward toward safer roads and a more sustainable transport system in Malaysia, in-line with the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
