Sea Hawk Future-proofs Fleet with Euro V Engine-powered New MAN Truck Generation

Sea Hawk Global Lines Sdn Bhd, part of the integrated logistics giant SHAL Group of India, has added 12 units of the New MAN Truck Generation with Euro V engines to its growing fleet of MAN Trucks.

SHAL Group Chairman P M Mohamed Ariff, Managing Director M F Mohamed Lafeer and Sea Hawk Director S Kamalesh received the trucks from MAN Malaysia Managing Director Andrew O'Brooks after a visit to the MAN Truck & Bus Sdn Bhd (MAN Malaysia) CKD assembly plant at Serendah.

The senior management team from SHAL Group and Sea Hawk were given a first-hand look at how their trucks were assembled.  They also had the opportunity to test drive the New MAN Truck Generation, including the flagship MAN TGX model.

The latest order from Sea Hawk was the second after the 20-unit order of the previous generation MAN TGS that was delivered in November last year.

The decision to invest in the New MAN Truck Generation with Euro V engines was in line with Sea Hawk’s aspiration to be a market leader that is fully committed to meeting its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments.

“Another factor that influenced our purchasing decision was that we have had zero complaints so far with our current batch of MAN Trucks.  That is perhaps the best feedback possible from our drivers,” said Sea Hawk director S Kamalesh.

MAN Malaysia Managing Director Andrew O’Brooks thanked Sea Hawk, a major player in warehousing with sizeable facilities in Port Klang Free Zone, Westport and Northport, for joining the sustainability journey with the New MAN Truck Generation.

“Market response to our New MAN Truck Generation with Euro V specification engines has been overwhelming.  We are glad to see key players of the transport industry like Sea Hawk doing their part to lower emissions.  As a manufacturer, we will continue to engage with the relevant authorities to drive change that will benefit the transport industry and encourage more companies to join this very important journey towards a more sustainable future,” he said.

Sea Hawk Takes Delivery of First Batch of 10 NTGS of 40 Units with R&M and Financial Services

Scania delivered the first batch of 10 New Truck Generation (NTG) of 40 units ordered with Repair & Maintenance (R&M) Contract and Scania Financial Services to Sea Hawk Global Lines Sdn Bhd (Sea Hawk).  A 10-year complimentary Scania Fleet Management System (FMS) Control 10 were also extended for all the 40 NTGs. The G410 A6X2NZ Sleeper Cab were handed over by Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia to Mohamed Ariff, Chairman of SHAL Group (Sea Hawk Lines – Sea Hawk parent company from India). S. Kamalesh, Director of Sea Hawk with top management from SHAL and Sea Hawk supported the handover with their presence. Scania’s fit-for-purpose solution will help Sea Hawk find the perfect balance of uptime, payload, and fuel efficiency.

The R&M contract that was signed will give Sea Hawk worry-free operation due to predictable costs for seven years. Sea Hawk will be able to focus on its business by fully utilising the NTGs with planned downtime giving maximum uptime due to precise scheduling for repairs and maintenance with readily available parts, eliminating disruptions in Sea Hawk’s daily operations.

Sea Hawk will also realise profitability immediately with fixed and predictable monthly cost from the Scania Instalment Plan 7 (IP7) that covers for seven years giving it total peace of mind.

For fuel efficiency the Scania FMS Control 10 delivers a lot more than just information and insights in support of the vehicle and driver performance. From core necessities like real time positioning of the NTGs, via vehicle performance, environmental reports, service planning and defect reporting all the way to driver evaluation will help it to quickly identify potential vehicle usage improvements. The tractor air deflectors fitted in the NTG aerodynamics design further helps in saving fuel up to a maximum of 3.0% fuel as standard while the Eco-mode setting as default enabled by the Opticruise saves even more fuel if handled by Scania-trained drivers. All these features will add up to significant fuel-economy resulting to reduced CO2 emissions. Sea Hawk will delve further into sustainability for its business which will go hand-in hand with increased profitability.

Equipped with the standard safety features, the NTGs carry technologically advanced Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and are also complemented with the Daytime Running Light (DRL) for better visibility for surrounding vehicles when on the road. A larger windscreen with extended viewing allowing for clearer visibility from every angle for the drivers, making it easier for them to operate in a safer environment.

A much-improved design from the previous generation makes the NTGs more driver-friendly with very comfortable adjustable seat that is close to the door. making it easier for them to operate comfortably. These G Sleeper, Normal Cab NTGs offer a premium working cab with easy access, generous storage options and world-class resting possibilities. Spoilt with an ergonomic dashboard that gives easy to-use controls and on-board entertainment, life on the road just got more comfortable and enjoyable for Sea Hawk drivers.

“I am glad to be in a sustainable partnership with Scania knowing very well that we are getting maximum uptime and payload from our NTGs. After all Scania takes care of the maintenance of our Scania trucks ensuring the best fuel-efficiency with lower CO2 emissions resulting in sustainable, increased productivity and profitability for our business,” stated Pankaj Nair, General Manager of Sea Hawk.

Established in 2003, Sea Hawk Global Lines Sdn Bhd, based in Port Klang, is a major player in the logistics industry, focusing on shipping and container haulage as its core business. With customers all over Peninsular Malaysia, Sea Hawk supports them through its branch offices in Penang and Pasir Gudang.

“I would like to thank Sea Hawk for their continued trust in Scania sustainable transport solution. Together in a sustainable partnership, we continue to ensure that Sea Hawk will prosper into the future,” said Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia.

It also announced the signing of a sales agreement today with its first customer, ALBA W&H Smart City, for 15 battery electric trucks, the first European-branded battery electric trucks in Singapore.

The L230B6X2*4NB trucks will be delivered in two batches. With the initial batch, which is already in production planning, Scania will homologate its battery electric trucks and the respective charging infrastructure in Singapore, while the second batch will demonstrate Scania’s ability to rolled out the vehicles on a fleet level.

In launching battery electric trucks, Scania aims to contribute to Singapore’s goal for all vehicles to run on cleaner energy by 2040 as well as Scania’s science-based targets for a 20% reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions generated through customers’ usage of its products.

“We are very pleased to welcome ALBA W&H Smart City as our pioneering partner towards more sustainable transportation in Singapore,” says Anders Liss, Country Manager of Scania Singapore. “It’s a significant leap forward in showcasing carbon-neutral transportation at a time when more organisations are coming on board to address the global climate crisis. ALBA together with Scania in a sustainable partnership is now part of the SG Green Plan 2030 journey towards net-zero emissions.”

“Being a city state, Singapore is the logical choice for us to establish our first fleet of fully electric vehicles,” said Sashi Kumar, General Manager of Solid Waste from ALBA W&H Smart City. “However, at the same time it is a highly competitive and demanding market with the highest service level expected worldwide, including daily collections and up to 12-hour shifts of continuous operation.”

Mr Kumar added: “We have monitored the market for electric vehicles for several years now and are happy that with Scania’s battery electric trucks, we finally found an electrified chassis that is ready for our daily grind of waste collection in the clean and green city of Singapore.”

The battery electric trucks can operate at close to zero emissions when using cleaner sources of electricity supplemented with the purchase of renewable energy certificates.

Each truck operates as a permanent magnet electric machine with oil spray cooling, with peak propulsion of about 295kW, 2,200 Nm and continuous propulsion of about 230 kW, 1300 Nm. With up to 250 km range on a single charge, it can cover short and medium distances on electric power.

Nine lithium-ion batteries, with an installed capacity of 297 kW, are backed by up to eight years of warranty. Direct current charging is carried out by the European-standard CCS type 2 plug-in connection at up to 130 kW/ 200 A.

In Singapore, customers can choose from the P-cab or L-cab series and 4x2, 6x2 or 6x2*4 wheel configurations with a maximum gross trailer weight of 28 tonnes. The battery electric trucks are suitable for urban operations such as distribution, waste collection, hook lifts, tippers and concrete mixers.

Mr Liss added: “An investment in a battery electric truck improves operators’ branding and market competitiveness as responsible organisations. They are addressing their own climate goals as well as the climate goals of their customers and society.”

Scania’s battery electric trucks are sold as a total solution with charging infrastructure, vehicle optimisation customised to the customer’s operations, repair and maintenance services and the option for financing and insurance services.

Statements from the Association of Malaysian Hauliers Regarding Increase in Minimum Wage

The Malaysian Government has recently announced the new minimum wages to be raised to RM1,500.00.

Following is the response by the Association of Malaysian Hauliers:

"We take a strong view on the increase pertaining to the increase in the minimum wage. It is our concerted view on behalf of the members that the increase to the minimum wage from RM1,200.00 to RM1,500.00 is irrelevant to haulage industry.

We urge the Malaysian Government to review and reconsider the increase to the minimum wage due to the following reasons:

1. the increase represents an immediate increase of 25% on the basic salary.
2. the increase will surely have a spiral effect on the increase of operational costs as wages represents the bulk of our costs.
3. as the dominant portion of the wages consists our driver’s salaries and commissions per trip, the motivation for them to consistently work without disruption will decrease immediately.
4. It must be noted that it is usual circumstances for drivers to earnapproximately RM3,000-RM5,000 per month.
5. From our survey with members, most of them are facing imminent difficulties due to the current global economic condition.

It is our fervent hope that the relevant agencies could engage with us as to allow us to explain further pertaining to this issue. We cannot but over-emphasize that majority of our members are Malaysian owned. We therefore urgently asks the assistance of the Malaysian Government to include us in the exempted category pertaining to the hike of the minimum wage scheme.

As stated, we reiterate that the Association is ready to explore and engage with the relevant parties to achieve an amicable solution.

Mr. Soo Chee Yeong
President
Association of Malaysian Hauliers
8th April 2022"

SuperNice Receives Industry-leading Scania with ADAS

SuperNice Express (SuperNice), a brand under the Unimax Group received the first industry-leading Scania coaches with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) in Malaysia. Roy Chew, Unimax Group Chairman received the keys to two units of Scania K360IB4x2 coaches with ADAS from Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia. An MoU signing ceremony was also held for an order of 10 more units, made up of six double-deck and four single-deck coaches with ADAS as well. This historic event was witnessed by Professor Dr Wong Shaw Voon, Chairman of Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Robert Lejon, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Sweden.

“The ADAS features will bring out the best from the Scania coaches in terms of safety and comfort for passengers and the drivers, alongside the already well-known fuel efficiency benefits for express bus operations and the reduction in CO2 emissions. Profitability is therefore achieved for my business,” stated Chew.

The standard ADAS Safety features include the Electronic Braking System (EBS), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Retarder. Further enhanced safety options such as the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and the new Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), a system that uses camera and radar to prevent a collision with the vehicle in front through automatic braking, were added on. The technologically advanced AEB is a first to be used in a coach in Malaysia and will elevate SuperNice to the highest safety platform.

“The Scania with ADAS technology is one of the many aspects the transport industry needs to move forward to reduce the number of road accidents in Malaysia. I believe SuperNice’s stance will encourage other express bus operators to follow suit,” stated Wong.

These Scania coaches also include Repair & Maintenance (R&M) contract. This is to assure SuperNice of maximum uptime and that the ADAS is maintained by Scania to secure the highest safety standard consistently. The Scania Hire Purchase agreement from Scania Credit Malaysia supports SuperNice with predictable cost over the entire lifecycle of the coaches. The complimentary FMS Control 10, onboard these coaches will help SuperNice reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions through the power of data analysis.

One could ask why Scania has not opted to make ADAS standards, instead of offering various options that customers can add on. However, El Tarifi said that there is a solid business case for sticking with the current practice as each business needs to be evaluated individually and that in some cases ADAS may not be required. "Each of our products is specified in collaboration with the client to find the best possible solution to address their needs and more importantly, ensure their highest profitability. There are, of course, certain applications where the addition of ADAS is not mandated or required," she said. In doing so, the specification of a Scania vehicle is tailored to the individual needs without incurring cost that are not needed.

“I am glad SuperNice decided to adopt a higher safety standard with the ADAS. I am also confident that their operations will enjoy the best profitability through total solutions from Scania,” concluded El Tarifi.

Top Team is a global competition for professional service teams within the Scania service network. Everyone who works in the service area is welcomed to compete in teams of three to five people. The most common contestants are service technicians, parts specialists and service advisors. Scania Top Team begins at the teams’ workshops with theoretical challenges in two parts. As teams advance to the national final stage, the theoretical exercises are supplemented by practical ones. The competition requires a high level of technical knowledge, team spirit and discipline. The format of the competition follows daily work patterns with the most essential objective being to satisfy the needs of our customers.

The Scania Top Team competition is a way of recognising the importance of service personnel to be the best, and top of their profession. It is brains, technological skills and teamwork that characterise the service personnel who Scania recruit and develop over the years. The industry’s need for service personnel such as service technicians, parts experts and service advisors, is growing. Truck, bus and engine uptime determine customer profitability. And uptime, to a large extent, lies in the hands of skilled and motivated service personnel. Essentially these traits were evident in all the qualifying teams, however the winning team demonstrated a superior level to secure the Top Team title.

The purpose of the Top Team competition is to increase knowledge about Scania’s products and services, as well as to strengthen collaboration between service, parts and service advisor personnel. Scania Top Team also gives a good overview of the national competence levels regarding Scania’s service offer and the actions needed in order to keep expertise on top.

Apart from strengthening the Scania image to employees and customers, Top Team also creates an understanding and commitment to Driving the Shift towards a sustainable transport system.

Only 12 teams, out of 1 500 teams worldwide from 70 countries, will go through to the Grand final round in Europe, competing for a handsome first prize of 50,000 Eur to the winner, 30 000 Eur to the first runner-up and 20 000 Eur to the second runner-up.

“By focusing on developing our front-line expertise, the Scania’s Service Technicians, we are ensuring the quality of the support and services we provide to our customers. Securing vehicles uptime is what matters to our customers and what helps them grow their business and profitability. As our industry undergoes the greatest technological shift of a lifetime, Scania’s front-line experts gathered in the ultimate challenge will be taking a leading position in driving the shift. We hope to attract more talents through these exemplar performance from these teams today. Congratulation to B100 from the Scania Malaysia Ipoh workshop for working as a team full of individual brilliance to win the 2022/2023 National Top Team competition.” expressed Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia.

This generation of technicians and the future ones are expected to drive real change in line with the transport industry undergoing a technological shift. Top team members will have a unique opportunity to affect and implement the technology needed to create a sustainable transport system.

Time for a Tyre Changer

There are several good reasons why fleets should invest in a tyre changer, insourcing this process. Firstly, with a tyre changer in the own workshop, downtime and waiting times are eliminated. There is no time wasted driving to the workshop to have tyres changed. With the current shortage of (foreign) labour, workshops now have limited capacity and tyres may not get changed right away. With a tyre changer on site, swapping tyres is fast, efficient and less labour intensive as there is no longer a need to drive to the workshop.

Using a Rotary tyre changer, the process is highly automated and does not require a lot of manual labour or strength. One customer that recently invested in one such machine now manages to change up to 200 tyres per day in their own workshop. With an estimated cost of only RM 6 per tyre, the ROI is quickly calculated. Comparing the process using the Rotary tyre changer with the traditional method of prying the tyre off the rim, the Rotary machine also offers protection of the rim, the tyre (important for retreading) and the health and safety of the worker operating it.

“By having such equipment in your own workshop, you enhance uptime, reduce wastage and efficiently manage the vehicle. Globally, we see a trend to insource this kind of operation as the ROI on such capital equipment is rapidly reached,” Nathan Vagg, Business Development Manager – Asia Pacific, Rotary.

Thanks to advancements in technology, the Rotary tyre changer is extremely easy to use. Previously, as Vagg noted, one would have skills to change tyres. Not so with the Rotary tyre changer, which makes it look like child’s play and thus suitable for any workshop.

Tyre Trial to Prove Safety and Performance

To prove the durability, performance and safety of retreaded tyres, transporters, Malaysian retreaders and rubber compounders partner up to put some misconceptions to rest.

The concept of retreading tyres is over 100 years old. Although the technology and materials have vastly improved since then, there are still some misconceptions that are hard to eradicate. When we see a burst tyre discarded on the side of the road, it is impossible to see what actually caused the tyre failure as we are zipping past. Many motorists would simply assume that it is a retreaded tyre and a cheap one at that.

To prove some of the misconceptions wrong GiiB and Asian Trucker have agreed to conduct and monitor a long term test of retreaded tyres. The rubber compounder has agreed to provide free material and labour to a number of fleet operators in order to conduct this test. The rationale for using retread tyres goes beyond the intention to prove that retreads are safe to use. These tyres are also good for the cash flow, improving the bottom line and are reliable. In addition, retreading is contributing towards a more sustainable industry as the casings can be used multiple times. The biggest vote of confidence for retreaded tyres may come from a very different industry: retreads are used on commercial airplanes.

UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge’s Search for Malaysia’s Ultimate Drivers Begins

UD Trucks and its sole distribution partner in Malaysia, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd (TCIE), have recently kick-off the annual UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge (UDEMC) for the fifth time.

The UDEMC returns with the purpose to identify and recognise the ultimate Malaysian truck driver who will be most capable in embodying smart logistics for today’s trucking world. It is a friendly, educational and motivational truck drivers’ competition that aims to increase skills and competency through training, theoretical and practical tests. All drivers who take part are required to go through UD Trucks’ comprehensive driver training programme, which is embedded into the competition structure.

One of the key challenges logistics companies are facing today is the shortage of skilled drivers. Through this competition, it enables TCIE's customers to attract and retain good drivers, and make each one of them an ultimate driver, who is adept on fuel saving, minimising operational costs, respecting their truck and cargo, and keeping the roads safe.

The competition structure is created to simulate a general transportation cycle and to visualize a profitable operation through three key test areas; pre-drive inspection on truck condition, fuel efficiency and safety driving, and maneuvering and parking skills. All these will link the driver’s skills to business reality.

“When UDEMC started in Malaysia in 2016, it was the first such drivers’ competition that was organized by a Japanese truck brand in this market that was carved out as our response to meet the growing need for smart logistics, by focusing on the drivers of our trucks,” said Steve Hedouin, Managing Director of UD Trucks Hub Malaysia.

“Truck drivers are absolutely essential to the entire smart logistics process. They are the unsung heroes in the economy, moving goods and cargo every single day, rain or shine. Participating in UDEMC will allow them to see their own positive impact as well as instill a sense of pride in their jobs and inspire them to be exceptional smart logistics drivers. This is what the industry needs for its future growth,” said Say Teck Ming, Executive Director of Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd (TCIE).

Participation in UDEMC is open to all Malaysian Quester truck drivers employed with UD Trucks’ customers, as they will be tested using the heavy-duty UD Quester truck. The competition is being held in stages comprising of pre-selections in various regions whereby 10 finalists with the best scores will proceed to compete in Malaysia final to be held in TCIE Ipoh. The winner will get to represent Malaysia in an all-expense paid trip to Japan and pit against other foreign truck drivers in the global finals in October 2022. Participants are encourage to sign up for the challenge before 15 June 2022.
