Scania Singapore announced that it has commenced sales for its battery electric trucks from 6 April 2022. It also announced the signing of a sales agreement today with its first customer, ALBA W&H Smart City, for 15 battery electric trucks, the first European-branded battery electric trucks in Singapore.
The L230B6X2*4NB trucks will be delivered in two batches. With the initial batch, which is already in production planning, Scania will homologate its battery electric trucks and the respective charging infrastructure in Singapore, while the second batch will demonstrate Scania’s ability to rolled out the vehicles on a fleet level.
In launching battery electric trucks, Scania aims to contribute to Singapore’s goal for all vehicles to run on cleaner energy by 2040 as well as Scania’s science-based targets for a 20% reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions generated through customers’ usage of its products.
“We are very pleased to welcome ALBA W&H Smart City as our pioneering partner towards more sustainable transportation in Singapore,” says Anders Liss, Country Manager of Scania Singapore. “It’s a significant leap forward in showcasing carbon-neutral transportation at a time when more organisations are coming on board to address the global climate crisis. ALBA together with Scania in a sustainable partnership is now part of the SG Green Plan 2030 journey towards net-zero emissions.”
“Being a city state, Singapore is the logical choice for us to establish our first fleet of fully electric vehicles,” said Sashi Kumar, General Manager of Solid Waste from ALBA W&H Smart City. “However, at the same time it is a highly competitive and demanding market with the highest service level expected worldwide, including daily collections and up to 12-hour shifts of continuous operation.”
Mr Kumar added: “We have monitored the market for electric vehicles for several years now and are happy that with Scania’s battery electric trucks, we finally found an electrified chassis that is ready for our daily grind of waste collection in the clean and green city of Singapore.”
The battery electric trucks can operate at close to zero emissions when using cleaner sources of electricity supplemented with the purchase of renewable energy certificates.
Each truck operates as a permanent magnet electric machine with oil spray cooling, with peak propulsion of about 295kW, 2,200 Nm and continuous propulsion of about 230 kW, 1300 Nm. With up to 250 km range on a single charge, it can cover short and medium distances on electric power.
Nine lithium-ion batteries, with an installed capacity of 297 kW, are backed by up to eight years of warranty. Direct current charging is carried out by the European-standard CCS type 2 plug-in connection at up to 130 kW/ 200 A.
In Singapore, customers can choose from the P-cab or L-cab series and 4x2, 6x2 or 6x2*4 wheel configurations with a maximum gross trailer weight of 28 tonnes. The battery electric trucks are suitable for urban operations such as distribution, waste collection, hook lifts, tippers and concrete mixers.
Mr Liss added: “An investment in a battery electric truck improves operators’ branding and market competitiveness as responsible organisations. They are addressing their own climate goals as well as the climate goals of their customers and society.”
Scania’s battery electric trucks are sold as a total solution with charging infrastructure, vehicle optimisation customised to the customer’s operations, repair and maintenance services and the option for financing and insurance services.
ALBA W&H Smart City is a joint venture between Berlin-based ALBA Group, one of the leading recycling and environmental services companies as well as raw material providers worldwide, and Wah & Hua, a leading Singapore waste management provider. In Singapore, the company is the NEA appointed Public Waste Collector for Jurong and Woodlands-Yishun sectors, where ALBA has established itself to be a leader in the space with their innovative suite of sustainability, digitalisation, and productivity solutions.

In our exclusive interview, Chief Executive Officer, Daimler Commercial Vehicles South East Asia Pte. Ltd (DCVSEA), Harald Schmid shares what the spin-off means for our markets. Setting the stage, he said that “The transformation of the business for cars and trucks has a different focus and develops in different speed. Now as an independent organization we will be able to have more speed in decision-making and we will get a better grip on opportunities for example, when it comes to partnerships or the cooperation with local production partners, which might play a bigger role in the future.”
There are of course a lot of benefits, which he identifies as following. Firstly, as mentioned before, the decision making will be much faster. Secondly, the split will allow DCVSEA to focus even more on customer requirements, which are very different in the commercial vehicle segment vs. passenger cars. And lastly, the biggest impact is for the Regional Logistic Center, where DCVSEA will be able to serve customers with spare parts better, as the brand will be able to stock-up more dedicated parts for the commercial customers across SEA region.
On top of that, with Daimler Truck AG there is now a bigger focus on our brands in the region: Mercedes-Benz Trucks, FUSO and Bharat Benz. “We can tap on the entire portfolio that the company has to offer and tailor our offerings to the market,” he said.
The news about the upcoming split has already made the rounds and certain comments have been anticipated. However, Schmid said that “We don’t expect the public to get confused as the split is very straight forward. There will be a company, Mercedes-Benz AG which covers Passenger Cars and Vans, and a company, Daimler Truck AG, which focuses on Daimler Trucks and Buses.” Customers that do have a fleet of Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars as well as Daimler trucks, will be approached by the respective sales team.
Customers in our region will continue to benefit from the dedicated local team. There is no change for the headquarters of the South East Asia region in Singapore. It houses a dedicated sales and aftersales team for Daimler Trucks and Buses who is taking care of the business for South East Asia. “I am very confident that the split and the dedication will further strengthen the focus on our customers, and will bring the overall business in the region forward.”
The existing staff here in SEA is hardly affected, as DCVSEA have already in most of the markets dedication for trucks and buses. In addition, DCVSEA will increase the headcount to inbound activities, which were taken care of by passenger car colleagues before the split. For example in the Logistic Center, there will now be dedication to Trucks and Buses too.“In some of our markets, we had to sign new contracts due to the separation. Other than that, the impact for the dealers and distributors is kept to a minimum to ensure business is running smoothly.” Schmid is confident that the customers will not be affected in any way by this transition.
During their last Global Conference, which was held online due the ongoing pandemic, the board members presented the new setup. Overall it was well received by the General Distributors of our region and everyone is looking forward to the split which will allow Daimler to focus even more on their customers’ requirements. “We will only be able to achieve our ambition with the customer at the centre, and this split of the company will allow us to do so,” said by Antonio Randazzo, Vice President of Daimler Truck Sales & Marketing South East Asia.
Concluding, Schmid said “I am very confident that this is the right direction moving forward and will enable us to allocate resources optimally for both internal combustion vehicles and electric vehicles. This is very important because not all markets in South East Asia will move towards electric vehicles at the same time. The focus on trucks and buses will ensure a balanced approach when it comes to the rollout of EV. “

Daimler Commercial Vehicles Thailand (DCVT) is pleased to announce FUSO 2021 product line-up enhancements in both the Medium-duty truck (MDT) and Heavy-duty truck (HDT) segments, as it moves to tempt new customers with the model line's fuel efficiency, improved performance and enhanced safety features.
The new or improved MDT and HDT products include stalwart FUSO models: FI1217, FJ1523R, FJ2528C, FJ2528RMC, and FZ4928TT. The new enhanced line-up features aerodynamic accessories that lessen wind friction and improve fuel-efficiency with wind plates and outer visors mounted on both the windshield and sided-bumper in HDT segment, while a sided-louver has been attached to the truck bonnet in the MDT segment.
An enhanced engine air inlet system delivers better performance in HDT FI1217C and F1217R models, reducing dust particles and moisture that could contaminate in an air inlet system, complemented by a robust truck head lock by latch with actuator.
Safety is a core FUSO concern with improvements in driver blind spot reduction, cabin safety and steep slope accents or descents all prominently featured. All HDT model have added another wide-angle mirror to reduce the driver’s blind spot while MDT models FI1217C and FI1217R have thicker rear-view mirrors to improve vison for driver. An extensive brake system uses an override switch to provide another protective measure on steep slopes.
All models in both MDT and HDT segments also offer upgraded interior designs with new grey-brown tone colour schemes plus 3D honeycomb pattern seats ergonomically designed to support different driver’s body types during long-haul drives.
Mr. Stefano Giordani, CEO of DCVT said, “Although there was a slight improvement in late 2020, overall the 2021 economic outlook remains challenging. To cope with this fluid business landscape, we will continue to principally focus on product development and aftersales services for the remainder of 2021.”
When it comes to the electrification of commercial vehicles, the focus will not be solely on the powertrain. In this segment, around fifty percent of vehicles are additionally equipped for use as municipal vehicles, on construction sites, in depots, etc. Currently, specialised vehicles, such as truck cranes, dump trucks or cement mixers require suitably designed PTOs that are coupled to the engine or transmission of the combustion engine drivetrain. However, because the architecture of conventional drivelines differs fundamentally from electric drivelines, familiar interfaces are no longer used, future PTOs need to be redesigned.
"This is where ZF, with its expertise as a systems supplier, can really support the industry towards its way to electrification," explains Kleber Vinhas, who has responsibility for the CV Powertrain Modules product line in ZF's Commercial Vehicle Technology Division. "With eWorX, we have simplified the integration of equipment into new platforms and are providing the market with a new standard interface for the operation of work bodies. This is a smart solution that takes us one step closer to zero emissions. With this solution, we support vehicle and body manufacturers in optimally mastering the complex challenge of electrification."
All-in-one, simple integration
The newly developed product family offers an innovative all-in-one solution to efficiently electrify PTOs for operating work equipment – regardless of the architecture used for the drive. The advantages are locally emission-free operation with significantly reduced noise, facilitating their use in cities and residential areas in particular.
The core of the system is the ZF eCubE which provides the link between the vehicle battery and the modular electric ZF ePTO which in turn drives the equipment. The eCubE contains suitable power electronics, a control unit and software packages tailored to the particular application. Seamless connection to the vehicle CAN bus integrates eWorX solutions to the vehicle's battery and energy management systems. New safety and assistance functions are also possible – as is the option to control the machines via smartphone or tablet from outside of the cab.
Test vehicle with customer interest from the start
ZF has built an experimental electrified, remote-controllable dump truck which can also operate independently of the tractor. The prototype is currently undergoing an intensive test phase in real world conditions at ZF’s Schweinfurt location. In cooperation with various body manufacturers, further vehicles featuring solutions for electric auxiliary drives are already under construction. Extensive real-world testing of these prototypes will also be carried out by the manufacturers involved.
The first customers have already signaled their interest in eWorX.

Having been in and around trucks for over a decade and listening to the needs and wants of operators, Asian Trucker has taken the next step and developed an own range of commercial vehicles. Based on extensive research conducted by the Asian Trucker team, the result is a modern, practical and efficient answer to the woes of the industry.
“We have worked with the top brands in the industry to amalgamate the best in class in order to create a vehicle fit for the Asian market,” said Stefan Pertz, who has worked in secret on this project in order to not shake up the market pre-maturely. Specifically made for the Asian market, the trucks are meant to fit into the environments found across the continent. As initial offering and first model, “The Asian Trucker -SP1” is a medium duty truck that is crafted to be an inner-city vehicle.
Focus groups have helped to shape the vehicle. Components are of high quality where it matters and cheaper components are used where savings make sense. “This way, we got the best mix between quality and cost,” he said further. The truck is also modular where it makes sense. For instance, a passenger seat can be added, but is optional as many companies do not require a second seat in the cab. A number of modules can be added instead. Among the options to fill the space is a fish tank (Arowana not included). Some items were subject to a lot of debate. For instance, the question if turn signals would really be needed…..
Asian Trucker did not stop there: The trucks will come in a CKD set, complete with jigs, rigs and tools to allow owners to assemble the vehicle themselves. “This way, cost for the assembly is not applicable, making The Asian Trucker – SP 1 even more attractive. Also included in the set are the diagnostic tools so that service and maintenance can be carried out in any workshop that prides itself in having a mechanic.
The exclusive unveiling will be announced later this week. Heavy discounts are promised to those that manage to find the venue.
“We are excited! Finally, we can put all our knowledge into the next project and demonstrate how we interpret and shape the commercial vehicle industry.”

Costing transporters their profits, this practice continues to burden the industry. However, there is a stopper for this malpractice that prevents this from happening.
Siphonblock Aft, the Malaysian anti-siphon device maker, reports substantially higher enquiries and sales for its wide range of anti-siphon devices since July this year. WK Chong, Siphonblocks’ Managing Director, commented that increased demand was not just for trucks, but also for construction and agricultural machinery. “The principle is the same for all of these: thieves take a few litres every day and this accumulates. It is made possible by not having an anti-siphon device installed,” he explained.
With diesel fuel prices getting back up to price levels seen before the pandemic, the incidence of 'skimming', the theft of between 5-10 litres on a regular basis, seems to be increasing. This can be very expensive over the long term if the fuel tank neck has no physical barrier.
Siphonblock's galvanised steel double-barrelled devices, will stop fuel theft from the tank neck, where 90 percent of fuel theft is believed to come from. Siphonblock devices are made for a wide variety of diesel powered heavy vehicles.
